Backstory

Jump was a song – like a lot of these, that took a LOT of tweaking to finally get to where we wanted it. When I say we, I mean me and various people I ask for feedback for pretty much everything. My girlfriend Sandra, whoever else plays on the song, my buddy Larry, and a host of great producers and musicians I know on Facebook in various feedback groups. In this song, we had some different choruses, we had the second verse first for a while, so many things changed! In the end, it became what you hear.

Little secret: I wrote Jump mainly so I could have something to play in a concert and have everybody Jumping up and down. Turns out that’s weird if I’m the only one doing it! LOL! Another secret: I actually wrote the first version of the chorus to be an a-hole, just one day after Kung Fu class, I was trying to make the dumbest song I could, and I figured that would actually be cool to people. That was years before we actually did the song, and years before I realized that what I was thinking of as stupid was actually just accessible and fun!

The second verse is a verse that was originally really dark, I’d written it down on a paper about 15 years ago. I realized that all I had to do was change a word or two, lop off a couple lines at the end and put something better, and voila!

Next I called my friend Rodney Bowe, who is a great bassist in Albuquerque who I’ve known for more than 20 years. We were in class together in the FIRST recording class I ever took! I think VERY highly of Rodney so it was awesome to find him and work together again!

And of course, eventually I brought my friend D’Santi Nava of Underground Cadence in to play some guitar. At first I had way more guitar by him – a lot of bluesy rock solo stuff, but I overused it, and people said it sounded dated or like it came from another world. In the end, I just used his funk wah wah guitar to make the verse sections swing a bit.
